Study Finds Low Risk of Dietary Supplement and Prescription Drug Interactions

There is always great discussion regarding the combined/concurrent use of dietary supplements and prescription medications. We always do our best to let people know about known potential interactions via the product label warnings. Additionally, we encourage users to speak with their physicians or pharmacists about potential risks of interactions. We also suggest that our distributors purchase a subscription to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, which is available on unfranchise.com.

However, as the American Botanical Council reports, a study published in the American Journal of Medicine has found very little actual risk of harm from dietary supplement and prescription drug interactions. Sixty-eight percent of the adverse interactions arise from only 5 herbal extracts. See link below.

Great Testimonial for the new PetHealth Grooming Products

Hi everyone,
I received this testimonial this morning for the new PetHealth™ Grooming Products that I wanted to share with you.

This is from Ginny Wiltsey, Ginny is an animal rescuer for ARGNC (Animal Rescue Group of North Carolina):

Dear Market America,

I have to say I am thrilled with the new PetHealth Products.

I used the PetHealth Hypoallergenic Shampoo on my Yorkshire Terrier Chelsea (whose coat is long) and my blue Merle Australian Sheppard Keagan (whose coat is short) and I couldn't be happier with this product! The way the shampoo lathered was so impressive and made for easy shampooing and rinsing. Their coats looked and felt so soft, healthy and shiny. And what a great smell, it lasted for days!

The Pet Health Paw Balm is excellent!! Keagan's paws use to be rough and dry!!! But not anymore since I started using the Paw Balm. I was reluctant at first to use this product because of the thought that it may leave an oily greasy residue which could cause my dog to slip and possibly hurt himself as well as stain our carpet or furniture. The Paw Balm proved me wrong! No greasy residue at all! After just one week, his paw pads are now soft and supple.

I am here to tell other pet owners if you are looking for some great grooming products... try the PetHealth line it is great!

MA distributor featured in Time

A couple of days ago I wrote about ma distributor Julie Court who appeared on the front cover of the February 25 issue of Time. Powerline and maBlog writer Brandon Keel sat down with Julie for an exclusive interview about what it was like to be on the cover of Time, her thoughts on the problems facing educators today and why she became a Market America Distributor.

On paper, Julie Court seemed like the typical ma Distributor who became involved with the company part time, in large part due to her incredible results with the products. But when a recent issue of Time magazine hit with her photo on the front, she didn’t appear so typical after all.

“It is very surreal,” Julie said in an exclusive interview with Powerline magazine. “I shake my head every time I see it, because I just can’t believe it’s me on the cover of such a prominent publication.”

Julie was featured as the solo cover shot for the February 25, 2008 edition of Time, reaching more than 4 million households worldwide. Shown seated at a desk with her arms crossed and lesson plan opened, Julie’s serious look of concern was spelled out in bold red type positioned directly beside her photo, which read “How To Make Better Teachers.”

The article addressed two main issues public schools throughout the U.S. have struggled with for a long time – attracting high-quality teachers, and more importantly, retaining them. After just four years of teaching English at a middle school in New York, Julie has an intimate understanding of the challenges that ultimately contribute to teacher turnover.

“What people don’t realize about this job is that teaching is actually last on our list of things to do,” she said. “There are so many other responsibilities that take up time and energy before we even see the students – memos and administrative reports, bulletin boards to maintain, making copies and gathering materials, keeping in contact with parents, planning, grading papers…the list goes on and on.”

Another major concern – especially with urban, inner-city schools like the one Julie currently works at – is an extreme lack of resources combined with declining classroom conditions. Often times, the students are expected to get by with damaged or insufficient workstations, including desks and chairs that are simply falling apart. Many classrooms do not have a computer in sight, and what books Julie does have for her students to reference are either too outdated or vandalized.

“It’s a shame, because kids in urban schools have just as much intelligence and potential as other children, but the lack of equity in resources can have a major impact on their futures,” Julie said.

Unfortunately, this particular issue with educational funding – or a lack thereof – isn’t limited to just the classroom setting. In fact it starts at the front of the class, leaving much to be desired with the average starting salary of teachers nationwide. Time reported that out of the 3.2 million teachers in U.S. public schools, the average beginning salary was approximately $31,753 during 2005.

This combination of heavy workloads, extra responsibilities and low starting pay is all too familiar for Julie’s mother, Kathleen MacLeod, who currently teaches math at the high school level. But for Kathleen, she found hope to overcome such challenges in the most unlikeliest of places.

“Five years ago, a lady by the name of Debi Waldeck gave an incredible wellness lecture on a ski bus,” Kathleen recalled. “I was so impressed by her passion and knowledge that when one of her business partners, Deanna Aadland, contacted me for a follow-up, I began to use the products.”

Within two years, Kathleen recognized the other benefits Market America had to offer in addition to superior, market-driven products. She realized that the financial opportunity available through the UnFranchise business model was a perfect fit for her future plans.

Now, Kathleen is proud to report she has reached Executive Coordinator on her way to the next Pin Level! But for her, the real success story here is that she introduced Julie to the company as a result of her positive experiences with Market America.

“Like all parents, I want my daughter to be healthy and happy,” said Kathleen. “It is difficult to be happy under the financial and emotional challenges of teaching. After I became a Distributor and introduced Julie to the Isotonix line of products, it became obvious that she could also benefit financially from being a part of Market America.”

“Julie is a focused, determined individual with a great capacity to share and care – all qualities that have served her well in the classroom and should transfer to her future as an UnFranchise Owner!”

Although Julie is still fairly new to Market America, she has already made Isotonix a routine part of her busy day. In fact, without the extra energy boost these potent nutraceuticals provide, Julie admits she might not make it through the day.

They're finally here!

Hi everyone, I'm very excited to announce that after the long wait, the PetHealth™ Grooming Products are finally here! Dr. Lange, our Director of Quality Control, opened a jar of the PetHealth Pad & Paw Balm and started rubbing it on his hands and lips. He said, "This is great, I want to use it on myself." He was very impressed by the quality ingredients used in the formula. Since it was a pet product, he said he expected to find mostly lanolin, but was surprised to find top quality ingredients. Most balms on the market are mostly petroleum jelly or lanolin. We opted to use the best and included jojoba oil, sweet almond seed oil and sunflower seed oil in the formula. The end result... a fantastic product formulated for your pet, but human quality. So, order one of each today today, I know you'll love them!

Enzymes - Go Beyond Digestion

There is a lot of talk surrounding digestive enzymes and how important they are to your health. Enzymes are the hard workers in our body that allow everything to function properly and, more importantly, aid in digesting the food we eat. Have you ever gotten that sore feeling in your gut like your food is just sitting there? Well more than likely, you need some enzymes to help get that food digested.

Food -especially fruits and vegetables- is also made up of enzymes, called food enzymes, which also help to digest food. But the problem that we run into is that when food is processed or cooked at high temperatures, the enzymes are killed. Therefore most nutritive properties of the enzymes are lost.

Our body is made up of numerous enzymes, some of which are located in our saliva, which are stimulated when we chew food. The main powerhouse where enzymes are created and stored until further use is the pancreas. When the diet is comprised of mainly high-fat or processed foods, the pancreas is stimulated to work harder to produce the enzymes needed to breakdown the food; therefore the body must work harder to digest the food.

A diet filled with raw fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts with enzymes can allow the pancreas to heal with time. This allows the body to spend its energy on more important processes like boosting the immune system and fighting disease. However, sometimes our body needs a little help. Especially if you are treating yourself to a steak dinner or indulging in your daughter’s birthday cake. A little help from an enzyme supplement could go a long way.

Here is a quick reference list:

  • Amylase – breaks down carbohydrates, starches, and sugars which are prevalent in potatoes, fruits, vegetables, and many snack foods
  • Lactase – breaks down lactose (milk sugars)
  • Diastase – digests vegetable starch
  • Sucrase – digests complex sugars and starches
  • Maltase – digests monosaccharides (malt sugars)
  • Invertase – breaks down sucrose (table sugar)
  • Glucoamylase – breaks down starch to glucose
  • Alpha-glactosidase – facilitates digestion of beans, legumes, seeds, roots, soy products, and underground stems
  • Protease – breaks down proteins found in meats, nuts, eggs, and cheese
  • Pepsin – breaks down proteins into peptides
  • Peptidase – breaks down small peptide proteins to amino acids
  • Trypsin – derived from animal pancreas, breaks down proteins
  • Alpha – chymotrypsin, an animal-derived enzyme, breaks down proteins
  • Bromelain – derived from pineapple, breaks down a broad spectrum of proteins, effective over very wide pH range
  • Papain – derived from raw papaya, broad range of substrates and pH, works well breaking down small and large proteins
  • Lipase – breaks down fats found in most dairy products, nuts, oils, and meat
  • Cellulase – breaks down cellulose, plant fiber; not found in humans

Isotonix® Digestive Enzyme Formula with Probiotics is an isotonic-capable food supplement that is made from a combination of DigeZyme®, a blend of amylase, protease, cellulase, lactase, and lipase, and Lactospore®, the probiotic Lactobacillus sporogenes, and potassium, magnesium, maltase and sucrase, designed to replenish essential digestive enzymes and probiotics, contributing to good digestive health.*
Remember to take your enzymes after a meal. Your stomach will thank you later.

5 Tips to Help Change Your Mindset

Have you ever heard the expression “Mind over Matter”? There has been a lot of research that shows the way you think about yourself and different situations affects how you or certain situations turn out in the end. If you have a positive attitude and enjoy going to work everyday then you will be more productive and will excel at your career. The same attitude applies to losing weight, if you tell yourself that you will stay overweight and miserable for the rest of your life then you will stay that way until you change your mindset and your behavior. Here are 5 tips to help you change your mindset and get you thinking thin so you can lose weight and lose those bad thoughts once and for all.

1. Imagine Yourself Thin – Look for old photographs of yourself when you were thin and post them on the refrigerator or at work as inspiration. Picture yourself six months or a year down the road when you have lost weight and imagine how good you will feel and all of the new experiences you can have since losing weight.

2. Small Goals Equal Big Accomplishments – When you make a few small goals instead of one big goal you are more likely to see progress and stay motivated. You also want to start slowly and not try to completely change your life over night. You will end up frustrated and no closer to your goals. Instead of setting your initial goal as “Lose 100 pounds” you can set small goals that will result in you achieving a large goal. An example a few small goals would be to start exercising 3 days a week, eat 5 servings of vegetables a day, and only eat fried foods one time per week.

3. Get Support – We all need a friend or someone that we can go to when times get tough. Join a Transitions 12 week program instead of trying to lose the weight on your own. If you connect with someone on a regular basis then you are much more likely to stick with a program and reach your goals.

4. Create an Action Plan – Planning ahead will prevent you from falling into the situations that are most likely to get you off track. Pack your snacks ahead of time so that you will be less likely or less tempted to eat the wrong kinds of foods. Schedule your exercise like you would an appointment. If you plan to workout with a friend after work or early in the morning then you are less likely to skip out on your workout because you will be letting down your friend and yourself.

5. Journal – Journaling will help keep you on track because it will keep you accountable as well as give you a record of your behavior. You can journal what you eat, when and how much you exercise, your emotions and your weight and measurements. Keeping track of this information helps to promote positive behavior because you don’t want someone to see that you ate that piece of cake or didn’t work out for a whole week. Journaling keeps you accountable.

Adopting these 5 tips won’t cause you to lose 10 pounds over night, but they will help to increase and encourage the good behaviors that put you on the path to weight loss. The Transitions™ program is a tool for weight loss and can help you reach all of your goals but only if you are committed to the lifestyle and to making the changes in your life, your head and your behavior.

Help Manage Acne Where it Starts - From Within

Acne. We all have them at some point or another in our lives. Some of us dealt with it in our teens and eventually grew out of it. Others, adult acne affects 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women at some time in their adult lives.

After many grueling years of dealing with acne and the investment of trying every over-the-counter acne product available from a drug store or a high-end cosmetic company product, I eventually grew out of it in college. I did a lot of research in searching for the best acne product available; I then realized that clear skin starts from within.

An ingredient that has been known to help with acne and assist with creating a clear complexion is Lactoferrin or Praventin™. Praventin is a patent pending proprietary bioactive protein complex rich in Lactoferrin. Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein isolated from bovine milk, found as a minor protein component of whey proteins. Lactoferrin contains 703 amino acids. Lactoferrin plays a supportive role in nourishing the skin from the inside through three proposed mechanisms. It enhances the body’s natural defenses against acne-causing bacteria, it helps to assist in the reduction in skin discoloration associated with a poor complexion and it is also an antioxidant that promotes the normal repair of damaged skin cells from blemishes.*

Check out Market America’s Prevaderm and the whole Anti-Aging Skin Care line for all your skin care needs. Your skin will appreciate it!

I recently attended our Market America Leadership Training in Miami, Florida...

"There were over 20,000 people in attendance. I sat through some of the most uplifting and positive training sessions I have ever experienced. As I listened to J.R all I heard and felt was his compassion and love for us. His family is so committed to helping us to succeed. I have been in corporate America for over 28 years and never once have I experienced a CEO who is willing to teach someone in their organization how to make more money than them. In J.R.’s closing on Saturday, I heard things like “Belief, Courage, & Commitment” are the basics for you to grow. He then went on to say “Believe that we can change our lives”, “Believe that we can help people”, “Believe that we can help each other”, PEACE ON EARTH will come from Market America helping one person at a time….. While watching J.R. wipe the tears from his eyes I knew I have finally found the means for me to obtain the freedom that I have been looking for. My Journey began with Market America on January 10th, 2008. A day I will NEVER forget…. Find your Dreams and believe in yourself… See you at the top." - Lynn DiRosa

Welcome to the Events Department!

My name is Michelle Obie and I have been an events coordinator at Market America for 3 weeks now. Talk about Busy! Prior to my being hired by Market America, I checked out the MA Channel on You Tube; particularly the MA Leadership Event videos since I was applying for an Event Coordinator position. The events were mesmerizing.

Coming from an event planning background I had a very good idea of what it takes to put on events of that size and quality. What I didn’t know is that the Events Department plans and executes over 8 Regional Events, 16 International Events, 30+ Seminars and Trainings, 2 Company Events, in addition to the yearly Leadership and International Conventions all in one year!

I know that I made the right choice in coming to MA, and my department is great! I look forward to seeing all of you at the next event!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day, and if you're like me, it's exciting to know that people all over the world are taking today to celebrate and care for the earth. As I was driving to work this morning, they were playing a clip of John Denver’s song, "Earth Day, Every Day." I think it is important for us to remember to celebrate Earth Day, Every Day; this is where we live, where we raise our children, where we work, where we play. As many of you are well aware, our planet is in need of a little TLC. We don't know yet what the effects of global warming will have on us and future generations, but we do know that there are small steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint and maybe even have a positive impact on our world.

One way to reduce your carbon footprint on the earth is to use environmentally-friendly cleaning products, like Snap™. The Snap line of cleaning products including All-Purpose Natural Concentrate, Heavy-Duty Concentrate, Dishwashing Liquid, Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softener are made with plant-based ingredients and essential oils that are biodegradable, non-toxic, and safe for septic systems and bottled with recyclable plastic. Snap's highly-concentrated formulas in addition to being economical, help to reduce waste generated from plastic bottles. One bottle of Heavy-Duty Concentrate replaces up to 16 bottles of the leading spot and stain remover; that's reducing waste by 16 bottles for one product. One bottle of All-Purpose Natural Concentrate replaces over 1000 bottles of glass cleaner; that's reducing waste by 1000 bottles for one product. Just imagine how much waste could be eliminated by everyone you know replacing their current cabinet-full of cleaning products with Snap!

Recycle your aluminum and steel cans, if everyone in the U.S. recycled their cans for one year, it would be like taking nearly 4,000,000 cars off the road for one year.

Recycle your newspapers and magazines; if everyone in the U.S. recycled their paper products for one year, it would be like taking over 5,000,000 cars off the road for one year.

Switch your regular incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescents, if everyone in the U.S. made this switch it would be like taking nearly 5,000,000 cars off the road for one year. (Guess what? You can buy compact fluorescents from several of our partner stores including Wal-Mart, Target and Home Depot.)

Wash your laundry on a cooler setting, if everyone in the U.S. did this for one year, it would be like taking over 3,000,000 cars off the road for one year.

Use a programmable thermostat to modify the temperature in your home when you are not there, if everyone in the U.S. used one of these for one year, it would be like taking over 12,000,000 cars off the road for one year. (Available from several of our partner stores including Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Smart Home and Sears.)

Use power strips to reduce energy waste from devices that are plugged in but not being used. If everyone in the U.S. used power strips to switch off unused devices, it would be like taking over 15,000,000 cars off the road for one year.

So take time today to reflect on the many different ways you can make a positive impact on the earth. If you know someone who's not using Snap, buy them a Snap PAK – save time, money and the earth! If you're not already recycling, start. Switch over to compact fluorescents – they're more expensive at first, but they last longer and can save you money on your utility bill. If you're buying a new car, consider a hybrid or one that gets better gas mileage. Together we can make a difference. Happy Earth Day!

from Natural Health Science

We are excited to announce a new study that reveals Pycnogenol® naturally reduces osteoarthritis. The study revealed Pycnogenol’s® capability to dramatically lower joint pain, stiffness, improve physical function and increase patients mobility almost three-fold.

The study, conducted at Italy’s Chieti-Pescara University is published in the April edition of Phytotherapy Research. The research sampled 156 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and evaluated their symptoms on WOMAC index scores and by recording patient’s walking performance on a treadmill.

The benefits of Pycnogenol® for arthritic joints are suggested to result predominately from the anti-inflammatory and vascular potency of Pycnogenol®. There are additional break through studies on Pycnogenol® and osteoarthritis expected to be published this year allowing for development of innovative, natural formulas for joint health.

Market America - Now LinkedIn

Market America Inc. is proud to announce that it now has a LinkedIn profile, at www.linkedin.com/in/MarketAmericaInc

For those who don't know, LinkedIn is a social networking site for companies and professionals. It's basically a professional's version Myspace or Facebook. Below is a chart of quick comparisons between Myspace and LinkedIn profiles.

Myspace LinkedIn
Friends Contacts
About Me Education / Work Experience
Leave Friends Comments Leave Contacts Recommendations

There're many benefits of having a LinkedIn profile. Below is a quick list of what Guy Kawasaki, one of my favorite venture capitalists, has to say about LinkedIn:

  • The average number of LinkedIn connections for people who work at Google is forty-seven.

  • The average number for Harvard Business School grads is fifty-eight, so you could skip the MBA, work at Google, and probably get most of the connections you need. Later, you can hire Harvard MBAs to prepare your income taxes.

  • People with more than twenty connections are thirty-four times more likely to be approached with a job opportunity than people with less than five.

  • All 500 of the Fortune 500 are represented in LinkedIn. In fact, 499 of them are represented by director-level and above employees.

Personally, I love LinkedIn. I keep up with lots of my ex-coworkers, ex-business partners, and industry colleagues through it. While I lived in DC, I've had recruiters representing major companies such as Yellow Pages and CarMax approaching me because they've found me on LinkedIn trying to fill a search marketing position and liked my job experience.

So to all that reads this post: If you currently have a LinkedIn profile, send us an invite. If you don't, create one at linkedin.com and send us an invite. We'd love to be connected to you!
